Hirschkäfer | Leipzig (Plagwitz)
The stag beetle is an insect that can be found frequently in Saxony, the part of Germany that I live in. Apart from its powerful appearance and extraordinary looks, it is an important part of the ecosystem.
This is one of the first realistic pieces that I painted on a wall, as a live painting for my friends’ birthday. The challenge with this one was not to make any mistakes while painting it, meaning: not to paint outside of the actual shape.
The location is in the backyard of my friends’ office, on an old garage. I really liked the original texture of the wall, with the rust leaking down in a strong red color, and wanted to keep that. So there was no possibility for cutting or correcting anything outside of the beetle.
